What are Branding Photos? (And do I really need some?)

Branding photos are professional photographs of you, that really capture you, your personality, your brand, who you are, and what you do.

They are used on your website, in your social media posts, as your profile photos, and in any marketing fliers or other marketing material you create.  Anywhere where you need a proper professional photograph of you.

So what are branding photos?

Branding photos show your personality, and your brand.  They are not just a straightforward headshot!  They can range from head and shoulders to full length shots, and they can be posed or capture you in action.  They show you, and tell your story – they tell your audience a bit about you, so your customers/clients can get to know you and want to buy from you.  They help you stand out from the crowd, showing how you are different from your competitors.

Your branding photos should show the image you want to project to your audience, and be a cohesive part of your overall brand.  They help to make you more recognisable, growing your visibility and building your brand presence.  They are a set of photos that represent your business, so they need to align with your brand and your visual branding, fitting in with their style, colours, props, location and mood.

I love to do a mixture of both these types of branding photos: more ‘lifestyle’ ones that show the real you, and behind the scenes of your life, to build your personal brand, and ones that show what you do and how you work in your business too.  I can do either in a shoot, or both.  I think that both types of photos are really useful for your customers to get to know you and what you do, both posed for the camera, and unposed whilst you work.

Do I really need them?

Using a professional photograph will show that you mean business, that you take your business seriously, that you invest in what you need, that you are a professional. They will be a huge asset for your business, helping you to build your brand and find more customers or clients.  And yes, ideally you need a range of headshots, personal branding images, and ones that show you at work too.

Using photos to show who you are, as well as what you do, will really help your business to grow.  People buy from people, and people that they know, like and trust.  And it really helps to see photos, to see the face behind the business, to see what you are like, to start the know, like, trust process.  Adding your personality into your brand, with a range of photos and not just a couple of headshots, will really speed up that process and get your customers to want to buy from you.  They will appeal to your ideal clients, and help you find your tribe, your online fans, your people.

Branding photos are also a big part of your visual branding, helping to set the tone of your business when viewed online or in any printed material.  So do make sure that their style is in line with the rest of your branding.
